Through the Dovžan Gorge all the way to the eastern edge of Košuta

Tržič - Jelendol - Medvodje - Košutnik - Spodnja (Lower) Dolga Njiva and back

ROUTE DESCRIPTION

The starting point for cycling tours is in the city centre, opposite the Tržič bus station. Parking is possible in public parking areas (parking lots at the Municipality of Tržič, on Predilniška Road at the entrance to the city-BPT, at the Tržič Olympians Hall, along the street Za Mošenikom, among others).

Go through Tržič along the main road to the northeast (towards Lom and the Dovžan Gorge). At Slap continue straight through the Dovžan Gorge, where the road will start to climb towards Dolina. From Dolina to Jelendol, the route stays pleasantly level and cool, following the course of the Tržič Bistrica River. Below the Born Mansion in Jelendol, keep to the right, following the gravel road that runs along the valley towards Medvodje, where you turn left and ascend towards Košutnik. At the small hydroelectric plant, turn right towards Dolga Njiva. When you reach the parking area under Dolga Njiva, continue on to where a mountain hiking trail branches off, and stay on the forest road. At a sharp curve to the right, a logging trail branches off to the left, which you take down to the pasture. A short ascent to the mountain dairy on Spodnja (Lower) Dolga Njiva follows, where you can order the traditional dish masovnik. If you want an excellent view, take a walk to Zgornja (Upper) Dolga Njiva, where Tolsta Košuta rises above the pasture, and the view stretches along the Košuta ridge, to neighbouring Austria, to the Kamnik-Savinja Alps and all the way to the Julian Alps.

On the way back, follow the same route to the end of the pasture, then on the meadow, below the mountain hiking trail that leads to Tegoška mountain pasture, turn right onto the forest road and descend by the logging trail to the parking area. From there return to Tržič along the same route you took on the way up.

good to know

In the summer months the pastures are grazed by livestock, so be sure to close gates behind you and try not to disturb the animals by going too fast.
