From Pungrat to Šija
A short but inspiring walk
Not far from the popular pasture Kofce, which lies beneath the mountain of Košuta, is the pasture Šija with its scouts' hostel and dairy. If you go by car to the pasture of Pungrat, you can hike to Šija even with small children and their grandmother and grandfather. There will be no lack of beautiful views during the hour-long walk.

From Tržič drive through the Dovžan Gorge and Dolina. In Jelendol, turn left and follow the Dolžanka stream. The road, which is rather steep in places, leads to a crossroads, where the road to Kofce branches off to the left. Turn right, which will take you along the southern side of Veliko Hudo Brdo, then turn left above the valley of Mrzla Dolina. As you continue on, be careful not to turn towards the pasture of Tegošče. Park below Pungrat mountain pasture, by the side of the road in front of the gate or just after it.
Once you've tightly tied the laces of your hiking boots, have a look around. You have come to a stunning mountain environment: before you is a hummocky meadow where livestock graze in summer, above you is the mighty Košuta with Kladivo on the left, Tegoška Gora on the right and Škrbina between the two.
You'll walk along a farm track and so there will be a bit more time for conversation and taking in the nearby as well as more distant sights. Since the track is used regularly by mountain bikers, it's best to keep to the right and there will be space enough for everyone. The children will definitely want to romp across the meadow, which will fire their imagination with its deep green colour and fascinating hillocks. How about we walk along the back of a great big dragon that is perhaps still sleeping below Košuta?
Soon you will arrive at Šija.
The farm track will take you around a gently sloping grassy area where a herder’s hut used to stand. Soon Šija Scouts Hut will appear through the forest, and shortly before you reach it, you can also see Šija Mountain Dairy below the road. Both offer food and drink to visitors, so you can take your choice.
Šija Scouts Hut offers accommodation in the upper rooms of the hostel and in a separate annex. Organized groups have a variety of activities on offer, from archery, outdoor survival courses, climbing and other skills that scouts are known for. Behind the hut there is also a shelter belonging to the Tržič Mountain Rescue Service.
Close by is the turnoff for a marked hiking trail leading to Kladivo, and Kofce mountain pasture is less than half an hour distant.
What about the view?
Košuta is truly magnificent, but the view opposite of the other side is also interesting. Below the hostel you can see the Kamnik-Savinja Alps, Stegovnik and Veliki Javornik, and also the northern side of Storžič, Tolsti Vrh with Kriška Gora, the Ljubljana Basin, the Škofja Loka Hills and Jelovica, a part of the Julian Alps and Dobrča with the pasture of Lešanska.
