The old town centre
Dragon's town of the enterprising and the skilledIt all began with the dragon. He came to life deep inside the mountain of Košuta. When he grew into a huge beast it split the mountain in two. This triggered a rumbling rock avalanche that buried the settlement below the mountain. To save themselves the inhabitants ran into the valley. After a time they ran out of breath and stopped. This is where the present-day town of Tržič grew and developed.

Altgutenberg
At the foot of Dobrča, above the settlement of Bistrica pri Tržiču, stands Altgutenberg Castle or "Hudi grad", as the locals call it, on a conglomerate rock outcrop.

Dr. Tone Pretnar Memorial Room
Tržič residents are justifiably proud of the work of the late Dr. Tone Pretnar, who through his sophisticated translations introduced many foreign authors to Slovenian readers, and through his tireless work disseminated Slovenian language and literature throughout the world. His memorial room, which can be visited at the Tržič Library, houses over 2335 units of materials from his personal library.

Germovka Forge
Germovka Forge is the best preserved metalworking workshop in Tržič. It was built along the water chutes through which the water of Mošenik Brook is artificially channeled. Scythes, sickles, shovels, and other tools were made there.

Kosmač Gallery and Workshop
Where wood is kingThe Kosmač Workshop designs and produces cultural heritage items made of painted wood. Products grounded in a rich ethnological heritage show the simplicity of Slovenes and their close relationship with nature. All three master craftsmen, who have been awarded many prizes for their work, will be happy to show you how they make one of their products, from a shoemaker’s lamp or herder’s sundial to beehive panels and other useful and decorative objects.

Kurnik House
Life as we can only remember itThe birthplace of the poet Vojteh Kurnik is an exceptional remnant of Tržič building heritage. The house with its stone-built ground floor, wooden upper storey, shingled roof, black kitchen and openings in the roof for the purpose of drying is a blend of rural and market town architecture of the 18th, 19th, and first half of the 20th century. The house presents the residential environment of a bygone era, while one of the rooms is devoted to the life and work of the poet.

Ljubelj labour camp
The Ljubelj labour camp was the only camp in Slovenian territory during the Second World War. It was one of 49 subcamps of the Mauthausen concentration camp complex not far from Linz, Austria. More than a thousand prisoners worked in appalling conditions from 1943–1945 to build the present-day tunnel on Ljubelj (Loibl).

Ljubelj (Loibl) Pass
The steepest and most beautiful route to EuropeNo route in Europe is as steep and beautiful as this one. This is the heart of the land of Tržič. Ever since there have been people in this region, there has been a route over the Karawanks to northern Europe here. For many long centuries it enabled smithing, tanning, and shoemaking to flourish, as Tržič inhabitants sold their highly esteemed craft products to faraway parts of Europe.

Mebron Tržič
The casting of various metals into moulds represented one of the cornerstones for the development of simple societies into advanced civilizations. At our museum you can view some highlights from the development of one of the most complex crafts in the world, which has been in existence for several thousand years.

Nativity scenes in Sebenje
During the Christmas season, the local villages of Sebenje, Žiganja Vas and Breg ob Bistrici set up nativity scenes in their yards and gardens. You are invited to walk through the villages and try to find all of them.

The shoes in this collection of Pavel Jazbec are steeped in history and provide an opportunity to experience the essence of shoemaking in Slovenia.

Museum: The Ljubelj/Mauthausen concentration camp 1943-1945
In the premises of the former military border post, there is a permanent exhibition dedicated to the former Ljubelj concentration camp, which was a subcamp of the Mauthausen main camp.

Slovenian Skiing Museum
The Slovenian Skiing Museum is a unit of the Tržič Museum and is housed in Pollak Cottage. This is no coincidence, as Tržič is one of the cradles of skiing in Slovenia.

Dreams of spaceSunita Williams is one of the most prominent astronauts in the world. She spent 195 days straight at the International Space Station (ISS), a world record for women astronauts until 2015. She has made 7 spacewalks and spent 50 hours and 40 minutes outside the space station. Altogether she has spent more than 321 days in space.

The dragon from the rooster's egg
At the entrance to the old town centre, resting on a bed of rocks, a dragon awaits you. According to legend, this dragon was responsible for the creation of the town of Tržič.

Tržič Museum
The Tržič Museum presents the once extremely highly developed trades and crafts that were the livelihood for many Tržič residents. The museum premises are in the former Pollak dyehouse and tannery in the old forging and crafts part of Tržič along the still preserved water chutes. Of particular interest is the display of shoemaking and footwear and the display of the tradition of skiing.
