Festivities in the heart of the Karawanks

sT. NICHOLAS´S LIGHTNING AND SANTA´S MAILBOX

5.12. 2024 at 5 PM, Trg svobode (old town centre Tržič)

Experience the Moment with Us! Join us as Tržič is illuminated by festive lights, and this picturesque town beneath the Karavanke mountains is transformed into a fairytale setting until January 12th. It will be a place where holiday magic happens and sparks are lit in people's eyes.

The juggling and fire performance group Čupakabra will amaze you with their unique act. Since it’s the eve of St. Nicholas' Day, St. Nicholas himself will visit, accompanied by his mischievous companions – the "parkeljni". As the town falls into twilight, Eva Boto will light up the evening with her performance and energy, joined by children.

There will also be stalls offering local treats and beautiful products, perfect for surprising your loved ones. And of course, St. Nicholas will bring a little something for the well-behaved.

Event Duration and Program:

December 5, 2024, from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM

• 5:00 PM: Čupakabra performance
• 5:25 PM: Eva Boto's concert
• 5:55 PM: arrival of st. Nicholas with ''parkeljni''
• 6:00 PM: lighting of the holiday lights
• from 6:00 PM: second part of Eva Boto concert

There will be also a small St. Nicholas festive market, were you will find something to snack and drink. 

A MEMORABLE JAKOB ALJAŽ CHRISTMAS

"Why in German?!" the singers resisted. On the very first day, I had drilled into their heads that we would sing mostly Slovenian songs. Since the other choirs in Tržič - Tržič is a very musical town beneath the Karawanks - sang only in German, we sang only in Slovene. But now I was suddenly forcing them to sing a German Christmas carol. (excerpt from Ivan Sivec's book The King of Triglav, which describes the life of Jakob Aljaž)

We Slovenes waited for more than half a century for a translation of the world's best loved Christmas carol Silent Night. It was put into Slovene language and sung for the first time on Christmas Eve in Tržič thanks to then chaplain Jakob Aljaž.

In honour of this unique event we are preparing a special guided experience for you during the holiday season.

MERRY DECEMBER IN VILLAGE KOVOR

In the spirit of holidays the village of Kovor will transform in a beautiful Christmas market with lights. The two main events on 6th and 20th December will offer you various activities for children: 

• 6.12.2024: 17.00 - 20.00 Christmas market (local products, food, drinks,..), 18.00 Lightening of festive lights (local folk music groups), 18.15 Kamišibaj theatre
• 20.12.2024: 16.30 - 20.00 Christmas activities

Holiday suggestions for culture lovers:

• The Tržič Museum has received two Valvasor Awards and is one of Slovenia's best museums. It is open from Tuesday to Sunday from 10 A.M. to 6 P. M.
• Tekec Nativity Scene is on view from 25^th of December to 6^th of January every day from 9 A.M.  to 7 P.M. During other times of the year it can be seen by previous appointment.
• During the Christmas season the people of the villages of Sebenje, Žiganja Vas and Breg ob Bistrici display nativity scenes in their yards and gardens. Walk through the villages and try to find all the unique arrangements.
• On the 20^th and 21^st of December, there is a Live nativity scene under the village´s linden tree near the church of St. Ulrich in Žiganja vas.

Holiday suggestions for enthusiasts of outdoor recreation:

• The ice rink in Ravne offers free recreational skating Monday to Friday from 4 P.M. to 7 P.M., and on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays and during school holidays from 10 A.M. to noon and from 4 P.M. to 7 P.M from 22^nd of November of 2024 to 2^nd of February of 2025.
• Enliven a winter ascent to one of the mountain huts with a descent by sled, on a sunny winter day or long evening in the light of a headlamp.
• The Tržič area is also a kingdom for fantastic ski touring – from easy routes suitable for everyone to more challenging ones requesting an alpine skiing experience.
